California Registration Number Requirements

California Department of Fish & Wildlife (CDFW) enforces specific format, sizing, and character standards for all vessel registration numbers displayed on California waterways.

Registration Number Format

  • California-issued CF numbers follow the format: CF XXXXXX XX
  • CF prefix stands for California (state identifier)
  • Followed by 4–6 alphanumeric characters assigned by CDFW
  • Ends with a two-letter suffix for vessel classification
  • Numbers and letters must be clearly separated by hyphens or spaces
  • All characters displayed in block (plain) lettering — no script or italics

Sizing Requirements

  • Minimum character height: 3 inches (federal and CDFW standard)
  • Minimum stroke width: ½ inch for legibility at distance
  • Characters must contrast sharply with the hull color
  • No maximum size restriction — larger is preferred for inspection
  • Validation sticker placement: immediately aft of the CF number

Character Spacing Standards

  • Uniform spacing between all characters in the registration number
  • Hyphen or space used to separate CF prefix from numerals
  • Hyphen or space used to separate numerals from suffix letters
  • Character spacing must not exceed letter height
  • Consistent baseline alignment across the full number string

Prefix & Suffix Requirements

  • "CF" prefix is mandatory — no alternative prefixes accepted
  • Suffix letters denote vessel type (e.g., recreational vs. commercial)
  • Both prefix and suffix must appear in the same font and size as numerals
  • Abbreviations or partial numbers are non-compliant
  • CDFW enforcement officers verify both prefix and suffix during inspections

Official CDFW Reference

All specifications above reflect current California Fish & Game Code §680–680.9 and CDFW Boating & Waterways guidelines. Materials & Compliance

Color & Material Requirements

California's Pacific environment demands marine-grade materials that withstand intense UV, saltwater, and coastal fog. Our decals are spec'd specifically for California waters.

California Color & Contrast Standards

CDFW requires registration numbers to contrast clearly with the hull surface. Dark numbers on light hulls or light numbers on dark hulls are both accepted. High-visibility color combinations are recommended for Pacific coastal environments where glare is intense.

  • Black on white — most common, maximum legibility
  • White on black/dark navy — accepted for dark hulls
  • Color combinations must pass the CDFW contrast test
  • Red, orange, or yellow numbers prohibited on all vessels
  • Metallic finishes not permitted as primary number color

Marine-Grade Vinyl Durability

Our California decals are crafted from 3M and Avery Dennison marine-grade cast vinyl — the same material used on commercial fishing vessels throughout the Pacific Fleet.

  • 7-year outdoor-rated cast vinyl substrate
  • Pressure-sensitive marine adhesive rated for salt spray
  • Resistant to diesel fuel, cleaning solvents, and bilge water
  • Maintains adhesion in temperatures from −20°F to 200°F
  • Meets MIL-PRF-21105 military marine standards

Reflective Material Approvals

California does not mandate reflective registration numbers, but CDFW approves their use. Reflective decals significantly improve night visibility and are strongly recommended for San Francisco Bay and SoCal harbors with high traffic.

  • 3M Scotchlite Grade 680 reflective approved by CDFW
  • Engineer-grade and high-intensity retroreflective options
  • Available in white, silver, and custom tints
  • Passes ASTM D4956 retroreflective sheeting standards
  • Compatible with all hull surfaces including fiberglass and aluminum

California Sun & Saltwater Resistance

California's coastal UV index and Pacific salt spray create extreme conditions that degrade standard vinyl within 2–3 years. Our California-spec decals are engineered to exceed a 7-year service life in these environments.

  • UV-stabilized topcoat rated for 2,500+ hours of California sun
  • Tested in Monterey Bay and San Diego Bay salt-spray chambers
  • Anti-fog laminate for Northern California coastal fog
  • Color-stable pigments prevent fading on SoCal sun-exposed hulls
  • Hydrophobic surface repels Pacific spray and morning condensation

Placement Rules

Placement Requirements

Incorrect placement is one of the most common CDFW citation causes in California. Our decals include a placement guide specific to your vessel type — bow, cabin, or cuddy.

Both Sides of the Hull

California law requires the registration number to be displayed on both the port (left) and starboard (right) sides of the forward half of the hull. Numbers must be clearly legible from either side when the vessel is underway.

💡 Tip: Display numbers in a horizontal position on each side — no vertical or angled placement.

Waterline Distance Requirements

The bottom of the registration number characters must be positioned at least 12 inches above the waterline when the vessel is at rest with a normal load. This ensures the numbers remain visible and unobstructed by water spray.

💡 Tip: Measure at rest with your typical load aboard — fuel, gear, and passengers accounted for.

Bow & Stern Specifics

Numbers must appear in the forward half of the vessel — typically on the bow area. They must not be placed on or near the stern. The forward-half requirement ensures enforcement officers can identify the vessel approaching from any angle.

💡 Tip: If uncertain of the midpoint, measure overall length and mark the halfway point as your aft limit.

Cabin & Cuddy Placement Options

For cabin cruisers and cuddy boats where the forward hull is occupied by cabin structure, placement on the cabin sides is permitted provided the numbers are still in the forward half of the vessel and maintain the minimum 3-inch height requirement.

💡 Tip: Cabin-mounted numbers must be on a flat, vertical surface — no curved cabin tops.
California-Specific Installation

Installation Guidelines for California Waters

Proper installation in California's extreme coastal environment requires specific prep, adhesive temperature awareness, and curing protocols. Follow these guidelines for a 7+ year lifespan.

Heat Resistance for California Sun

California's desert-adjacent coastline — from San Diego to Monterey — can push hull surface temperatures above 160°F in direct sun. Our marine-grade vinyl and adhesive system remains dimensionally stable up to 200°F, preventing bubbling, edge lift, and color shift during peak summer.

Saltwater & Pacific Spray Durability

Pacific Ocean salt concentration is significantly higher than the Gulf or Atlantic. Our adhesive is formulated specifically for high-salinity environments, rated for continuous salt-spray exposure per ASTM B117 (500-hour salt-spray certification). Decals stay bonded through heavy Pacific swells and wake spray.

Coastal Fog & Moisture Resistance

Northern California's marine layer brings persistent moisture that penetrates standard adhesives. Our hydrophobic laminate and waterproof adhesive create a moisture-tight bond that resists the repeated wet-dry cycles common from Crescent City to Half Moon Bay.

Marine-Grade Adhesives for CA Weather

We use pressure-sensitive acrylic adhesive rated for marine applications — compatible with fiberglass, aluminum, painted steel, polyethylene, and gel coat. The adhesive cures in 72 hours at California ambient temperatures and achieves full bond strength within 7 days. Application in temperatures between 50°F–90°F recommended.

Quick Installation Checklist — California Edition

1

Clean hull with isopropyl alcohol (99%) — remove all wax, salt residue, and oxidation

2

Ensure surface temperature is between 50–90°F — avoid direct midday California sun

3

Measure and mark placement points on both hull sides before peeling backing

4

Apply decal from center outward using a plastic squeegee to eliminate air pockets

5

Apply firm pressure along all edges — especially at character endpoints

6

Allow 72-hour cure before first launch — 7 days before pressure washing
