FWC-approved registration number decals engineered for Florida's saltwater sun, spray, and year-round UV exposure. Stay legal, stay on the water.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) sets strict standards for boat registration numbers. Here's exactly what your decals must meet to stay compliant on Florida waters.
Required Format
State prefix · 4-digit number · 2-letter suffix — minimum 3 inches tall
FL + 4 Digits + 2 Letters
Every Florida-registered vessel must display the registration number in the exact format: 'FL' followed by four Arabic numerals, then two capital letters — for example, FL 1234 AB. No abbreviations or variations are permitted.
3 Inches Tall
FWC regulations require each character to be at least 3 inches in height. This ensures visibility to FWC officers and other boaters. Standard compliance kits ship at exactly 3" height; larger sizes are allowed.
Space After 'FL' & After 4 Digits
Characters must be block lettering and spaced to clearly read as three groups: 'FL', the four-digit number, and the two-letter suffix. A space or hyphen must separate each group (e.g., FL 1234 AB or FL-1234-AB).
Plain Block Letters — No Scripts
Only upright, plain block letters in a standard sans-serif style are permitted. Stylized, italic, or decorative fonts do not meet FWC requirements and can result in a citation during a boarding inspection.

Florida law requires high-contrast colors so registration numbers are legible from a distance. Here's what's permitted — and what's not.
Example: white-on-black and black-on-white — both FWC-compliant
FWC Tip: When in doubt, choose black on white or white on black. These are universally accepted and always readable.
While not mandated statewide, reflective vinyl is strongly recommended for Florida boaters. FWC officers can read reflective numbers from spotlight distances during nighttime patrols, reducing the chance of a safety stop.
Florida's saltwater environment is harsh. Our marine-grade vinyl is rated for 7+ years of outdoor UV exposure and is designed specifically to resist salt-water spray, sun fading, and humidity — critical for Gulf Coast and Atlantic boaters.
Pair our reflective white vinyl with black lettering for maximum compliance across all hull colors. Explore our reflective options on the reflective registration numbers page.
Where you put your registration numbers matters as much as the numbers themselves. Incorrect placement is one of the most common reasons Florida boaters receive FWC citations.
Placement Diagram (Top View)
Both port and starboard sides — forward half — above the waterline
The registration number must appear on both the port (left) and starboard (right) sides of the bow — the forward half of the vessel. The number must face forward. This rule applies to all powered vessels and sailboats over 16 feet.
Numbers must be clearly visible above the waterline at all times — even when the vessel is underway. FWC requires that numbers not be partially submerged or obscured by spray guards, canvas, or trim tabs.
Nothing may obstruct the registration number — not mooring lines, fenders, fishing rod holders, or canvas covers. Numbers must be unobstructed and readable from a distance of at least 100 feet.
Registration numbers must be kept separate from any other numbers, letters, or markings. The validation sticker (registration decal) is placed on the port side near the registration number — not on top of it.
Jet skis, WaveRunners, and other personal watercraft registered in Florida follow the same number format and color rules. Placement on PWC is typically on the hull sides forward of the operator's position. Because hull space is limited, 3-inch characters remain mandatory — do not downsize. All FWC boarding inspection rules apply equally to PWC.
Installing registration numbers in Florida's climate is different from northern states. Heat, humidity, and saltwater demand proper technique for a long-lasting, compliant result.
Florida sees 237+ sunny days per year. Our decals are manufactured with UV-stabilized inks and laminates rated to resist fading for 7+ years, even in direct South Florida sun exposure.
Salt spray accelerates adhesive failure and ink degradation on inferior vinyl. Our marine-grade pressure-sensitive adhesive maintains a permanent bond on fiberglass, aluminum, and gelcoat hulls — even in brackish and saltwater environments.
Florida's Gulf Coast and Atlantic waters can get rough. Our vinyl is coated with a protective overlaminate that resists scuffing from ropes, dock lines, and debris — keeping numbers readable through the season.
Each kit ships with application fluid, a squeegee, and step-by-step instructions. Wet application lets you reposition characters to get the spacing exactly right before the adhesive sets — no professional installer needed.
Pro Tip for Florida Boaters
Apply decals in the shade on a cool morning — never in direct afternoon sun. Surface temperatures above 95°F can cause the vinyl to stretch and adhesive to activate too quickly.
From the Keys to the Panhandle — Florida boaters trust our decals to keep them FWC-compliant season after season.
"FWC stopped us on the Intracoastal last summer — officer said our old numbers were faded and couldn't be read at 50 feet. Ordered new ones from here, applied them the next morning. Perfect 3-inch block letters, exactly the right format. Haven't had an issue since."

"I was nervous about getting the spacing right on my PWC. The kit came with everything — fluid, squeegee, instructions. Applied both sides in 20 minutes. Numbers look professional and the reflective material really pops in the evening."

"Three years in Tampa Bay salt water and these decals look almost new. I've gone through two sets of cheaper vinyl from a local shop that faded within 18 months. Worth every penny for the marine-grade material."

"Just bought a used boat and needed new numbers after re-registering with DHSMV. Website made it easy — I just entered my FL number, picked the size, and they shipped the next day. Applied in the marina parking lot, no issues."

"Customer service was fantastic when I wasn't sure which color to choose for my dark navy hull. They confirmed white-on-navy is FWC-compliant and sent a sample photo. Numbers look great on the water."
