Meet every NC Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) requirement with precision-cut, UV-resistant decals built for the Outer Banks, coastal sounds, and piedmont lakes. Fast shipping — stay legal on every North Carolina waterway.
The NC Division of Marine Fisheries enforces strict formatting rules for all registered watercraft. Our decals are produced to exact DMF specifications so your vessel passes every inspection.
North Carolina registration numbers follow the federal standard: the "NC" prefix, followed by up to 4 digits, then a 2-letter suffix. Example: NC 1234 AB. The letters I, O, and Q are never used to avoid confusion with numerals.
Per DMF regulations, each character must be at least 3 inches (76 mm) tall. Characters must be bold, block-style — script or italicized fonts are not permitted. Consistent stroke width ensures readability at enforcement distances.
A minimum gap of one inch is required between the NC prefix, the numerical section, and the letter suffix. Hyphens or spaces may be used as separators. Tight or compressed spacing is a common citation during NC Wildlife Resources Commission inspections.
Characters must be in a plain, vertical block style. Outlined, shadowed, or decorative lettering styles are non-compliant. Both the registration number AND the validation decals must be displayed together on the forward half of each side of the hull.
Pro Tip: NC also requires vessels to display a current validation sticker (decal) adjacent to the registration number. Our full compliance kits include both the registration number set and the validation sticker tabs. View the full federal guide
From the Outer Banks to the Piedmont, North Carolina boaters face uniquely varied conditions. Our marine-grade materials are engineered for every NC environment.
Outer Banks & Coastal NC
Our marine-grade vinyl withstands the relentless salt spray of the Pamlico Sound, Albemarle Sound, and Atlantic-facing inlets. Rated for 7+ years in high-salinity environments without edge lifting or ink degradation.
Atlantic Coastal Environment
North Carolina's coastal sun is intense. Our decals use UV-inhibitor topcoats that resist fading for years — keeping your registration legible under DMF inspections without reordering annually.
NC Compliance
NC regulations require high contrast between the registration number and the hull color. We offer black, white, navy, and red — and our team can advise on the highest-contrast choice for your hull finish.
Piedmont & Mountain Lakes
Boaters on Lake Norman, Jordan Lake, Falls Lake, or the mountain lakes of western NC have different conditions. Our freshwater-optimized sets still exceed DMF specs while being lighter on material cost.

Incorrect placement is one of the most common NC boating citations. Understand exactly where your registration numbers must go — whether you captain a bass boat on Lake Gaston or a shrimp trawler out of Beaufort.
NC regulations require registration numbers to appear on BOTH port and starboard sides of the hull, within the forward half of the vessel (closer to the bow). The number must be clearly visible from the water on either side.
Numbers must be placed above the waterline and in an area that is unobstructed by equipment, dock lines, or other vessel features. They should be legible at a reasonable distance per DMF enforcement standards.
On most recreational vessels, the bow area is the preferred placement zone. The registration number must not be obscured by the anchor, anchor chain, bowsprit, or any other forward fixture.
Commercial fishing vessels — common on the NC coast from Beaufort to Dare County — may have specialized hull configurations. Trawlers and shrimpers must still meet the forward-half, both-sides rule, typically placing numbers on the wheelhouse or forward superstructure if the hull is obstructed.
Numbers go on BOTH sides — forward half only
Port side and starboard side, above the waterline, within the first half of the hull from bow to stern.
Proper installation is just as important as the right materials. North Carolina conditions range from ocean saltwater to freshwater mountain lakes — here is how to get a lasting bond in each environment.
Clean hull surface with isopropyl alcohol — remove salt residue or wax
Measure and mark placement position per DMF forward-half rule
Apply at temperatures above 50°F for optimal adhesive bond
Use wet-application method in high-humidity coastal conditions
Squeegee from center outward; remove transfer tape after 24 hours
Inspect seal edges — press down any lifted corners immediately
Choose the right kit for your NC vessel — from freshwater lake boats to ocean-going commercial trawlers. All kits include DMF-compliant formatting out of the box.

From the Outer Banks to Jordan Lake — North Carolina boaters trust our decals to keep their vessels compliant and looking great on every waterway.
“Running charters out of Oregon Inlet, my boat is in salt spray every day. These decals have held up for two full seasons without any edge lifting or fading. The characters are still crisp and DMF officers have never had an issue with my numbers.”
Derek H.
Charter Fishing Captain
Outer Banks, NC
“Ordered after buying a used pontoon on Lake Norman. The customizer was easy — I just typed in my NC number, picked white to contrast my dark hull, and the decals arrived in two days. Perfect size, perfect placement. Highly recommend.”
Paula T.
Pontoon Boat Owner
Lake Norman, NC
“Commercial boat, so I needed to get the placement right on the wheelhouse. The team walked me through exactly where to put the numbers for a trawler with an obstructed hull. No compliance issues at the docks and they look great.”
Marcus W.
Shrimp Trawler Operator
Beaufort, NC
“Bought these when my old decals finally peeled after years of saltwater. The new ones are noticeably better quality — thicker vinyl, sharper cut edges. Installed them in the marina parking lot using the instructions provided. Super easy.”
Linda S.
Recreational Boater
Wrightsville Beach, NC
“Fast shipping and exactly the right format. I fish Jordan Lake tournaments and had a registration inspection at the ramp this spring. Officer said the numbers looked great and checked all the NC boxes. Worth every penny for peace of mind.”
