USCG Federal Size Requirements

The U.S. Coast Guard establishes baseline dimensional standards for vessel registration numbers under 33 CFR Part 173. These apply to all federally-registered and state-registered motorized vessels in U.S. waters unless a state law is stricter.

Minimum Character Height

3 inches (76 mm)

All letters and numerals must be at least 3 inches tall — this is the single most important USCG size rule.

Maximum Character Height

No federal maximum

Federally there is no upper limit, but larger characters must still contrast with the hull and maintain legibility. Some states cap at 6 inches.

Stroke Width (Line Thickness)

Proportional — approx. 1/2" for 3" letters

Characters must be clearly legible. A stroke-to-height ratio of roughly 1:6 ensures readability at distance.

Character Spacing

3/8" (9.5 mm) between characters

Federal rules require a minimum gap of 3/8 inch between individual letters and numbers to prevent them from blending together.

Space Between State Prefix & Number

3/8" gap required

The hyphen or space separating the state designator block from the number block must also measure at least 3/8 inch.

Color Contrast

Must contrast with hull

Characters must be in a color that clearly contrasts with the background of the hull — dark letters on light hull or vice versa.

Why 3 Inches Is the Magic Number

The USCG's 3-inch minimum was designed so that registration numbers remain legible to a law enforcement officer on an approaching vessel at standard boarding distances (up to 50 feet). Numbers smaller than 3 inches have been shown in field testing to be difficult to read quickly in choppy water or low light conditions — and can result in a federal citation even if the state registration is otherwise valid.

Vessel-Type Guide

Sizing by Boat Length & Vessel Type

While 3 inches is always the legal minimum, choosing a size that matches your hull keeps numbers readable and proportionate.

State Variations

State-Specific Size Rules

Most states follow the USCG 3-inch baseline. Here's how popular boating states approach sizing requirements.

California

3" per USCG

Must be block characters; reflective material recommended.

California requirements

Florida

3" per USCG

Characters must be plain block style. No cursive or stylized fonts.

Florida requirements

Texas

3" per USCG

TPWD encourages 6-inch characters on vessels over 26 ft for enhanced visibility.

Texas requirements

Georgia

3" per USCG

Standard USCG dimensions apply. Characters must contrast with the hull.

Georgia requirements

North Carolina

3" per USCG

3-inch minimum enforced; block lettering required.

North Carolina requirements

All Other States

3" (USCG baseline)

Most states default to the USCG 3-inch minimum. Always check your state boating authority.

Proportions & Materials

Character Spacing, Proportions & Material Standards

Getting the height right is just the start. Proper stroke width, spacing, and material thickness ensure your numbers hold up and stay legible for years.

Character Height

Minimum 3 inches

Measured from the topmost point to the bottommost point of any character. Do not include any base below the character stroke.

Stroke Width (Thickness)

≈ 0.5 inches for 3" characters

The thickness of each stroke should be approximately 1/6 of the character height. For 3-inch letters, that's about ½ inch. Thin strokes fade at distance.

Character Width

Approx. 60–75% of height

Standard block font proportions. A 3-inch-tall character is typically 1.8–2.25 inches wide, keeping the format compact yet legible.

Inter-Character Spacing

3/8 inch minimum

The gap between adjacent characters (letters and digits) must be at least 3/8 inch (9.5 mm). This prevents characters from visually merging at reading distance.

Number Group Spacing

3/8 inch between state prefix & sequence

There must be a clear gap — at least 3/8 inch — between the state-code prefix block (e.g. 'FL') and the numeric portion (e.g. '1234 AB').

Material Thickness

Vinyl: 2–4 mil minimum

Premium marine-grade vinyl decals should be at least 2 mil thick. Reflective or two-color variants range from 3–6 mil, ensuring durability against UV, salt, and abrasion.

How to Visualize 3-Inch Numbers

  • A standard credit card is about 2.125 inches tall — 3-inch registration characters are roughly 40% taller.
  • A dollar bill is 2.61 inches tall — 3-inch numbers are just slightly taller than a folded bill.
  • Stack three U.S. quarters edge-to-edge; that total height (~3 inches) equals the minimum character height.

Vinyl Material Thickness & Durability

Thicker vinyl resists peeling, fading, and abrasion — essential for marine environments. Match your material to your boating conditions.

Measurement & Verification

Tools for Measuring & Verifying Number Size

Before you head out, verify your existing numbers meet the 3-inch federal minimum. These tools and methods make it simple.

Standard Tape Measure

The simplest tool — measure from the very top to the bottom of a character stroke. Make sure you're measuring the character body, not any shadow or outline effect.

Pro tip: Lay the tape vertically against the number, flush with the hull surface for accuracy.

Digital Calipers

Ideal for measuring stroke width and inter-character spacing. Digital calipers accurate to 0.01 mm let you verify that spacing meets the 3/8-inch (9.5 mm) federal standard.

Pro tip: Available at any hardware store for under $20. Perfect for pre-install verification of decal dimensions.

Printed Sizing Template

Print a 3-inch height guide (a simple line at 3 inches on letter paper) and hold it next to your existing numbers to check compliance before ordering replacements.

Pro tip: Ensure your printer is set to 100% scale (no 'fit to page'). Verify by measuring the resulting ruler marks.

Order from a Certified Supplier

The easiest method: order from a marine decal supplier that pre-sizes characters to USCG standards. All our registration number decals are produced at exactly 3 inches (or your chosen size) — no measuring needed.

Pro tip: Our sizing is pre-verified against USCG 33 CFR Part 173 standards for every order.

6-Step Size Verification Checklist

Use this before every boating season to ensure compliance.

1

Identify the tallest character in your registration number (often '8', 'B', or 'H').

2

Place a tape measure vertically alongside that character.

3

Measure from the lowest visible point of the stroke to the highest — ignore any adhesive backing.

4

Confirm the reading is ≥ 3.0 inches (76 mm). Numbers under 3 inches fail federal requirements.

5

Check inter-character spacing: slide the tape horizontally between two adjacent characters. Gap must be ≥ 3/8 inch (9.5 mm).

6

Confirm color contrast: stand 10–15 feet from the boat and confirm numbers are instantly readable against the hull color.
